Where's Bertie? He's in a free Stellplatz about 100m away from (and with a view of) the river at Neuburg an der Donau. (Exact location: 48.74044, 11.18407)
Weather: Mainly sunny except for a period mid-afternoon when it clouded over and even dropped a few spots of rain on us. Much warmer than the last few days.
You remember all that poring over resources I did last week, to come up with a vague plan for the next couple of weeks? I revisited it yesterday and decided it didn't look entirely sensible, looping way back west to go east to go back west again. A series of route planning enquiries to Google Maps told me that my idea of a Plan B would save us 55km of driving whilst still visiting most of the same places (but in a different order), and adding in two extra, whilst still getting us to the Stuttgart area by the end of next week.
Plan A (roughly)
Plan B (equally roughly)
The only part of Plan A that remained unchanged was today's visit to Neubug an der Donau. We drove straight past here on Friday, but didn't have time to stop and I didn't want to omit a visit, so we resigned ourselves to the 23km backtrack.
Having had a good look around the old town (and bits of the rest of the place too) today, I'm happy to say that it was a worthwhile detour to come here, although I don't at all agree with the assertion of the tourist leaflet that: "The old town of Neuburg is one of the most beautiful ...in Bavaria." It has plenty of attractive and imposing buildings, but they're located such that I didn't find myself looking along the street thinking "Now isn't that something?!". We've been to other towns where from practically every position in every street the view was worthy of a postcard.
It's not all about the old town, though. Bertie is sitting within sight of the Danube, with the Englischer Garten on the bank right opposite, and to me the vicinity of the river, and the views along it, are as lovely as the the town is interesting.
The palace/castle is striking on the approach to the town, sitting in a dominant position up above the river. This snap was taken from just in front of the Englisher Garten.
Bertie is hiding behind the trees on the left bank, opposite the building you can see on the right bank.
Karlsplatz square in the old town.
The interior of the church shown in the snap above. We walked past many churches today, but this was the only one we entered.
A section of the stucco which covered almost every surface of the interior. A bit of a change from the usual frescos.
This would have won the fountain of the day award...
If it hadn't been for this one, which won for being the most ridiculously functional and unartistic fountain I can think I've ever seen. Four sections of functional pipework, with (as far as I can see) absolutely no artistic merit whatsoever.

More Constable painting photos. I bet there's a load of controversial comment somewhere about that fountain.
ReplyDeleteI've tried to convince myself (unsuccessfully) that the functional pipework is just holding the place of a proper centrepiece that is away undergoing repair or refurbishment.
