Friday 30 September - Köln (Cologne)

Where's Bertie? He's in a car park on the west side of Köln. It costs €5 for 24 hours. Exact location: 50.93879, 6.92281.
Weather: Wall-to-wall sunshine and warm-enough when not in the shade.

A gloriously quiet night in Liedberg. The church bells chimed every quarter hour, but even though I heard them a couple of times in the night, they only disturbed us at 0630 when they chimed 128 o'clock.

Giving Mick the option of walking from where we were to a former stately home, in reportedly fine grounds, or coming straight to Köln to recce the morrow's parkrun, he opted for the latter.

Once in Köln, our walk to and around Hiroshima-Nagasaki Park was in glorious sunshine:

The communications tower, which is quite a landmark, was formerly home to a rotating restaurant, but has been closed since 1992.

I'm not quite sure what happened to the rest of the day. I know we talked about either walking into the city or doing something locally, but then somehow we did nothing.

As for tonight's kipping spot, when we arrived we only intended to park for a couple of hours, before moving 5km back out of the city for the night, mainly because the location is in the Park4Night database as daytime parking only, with a negative review from someone who was moved on by the local police. Arriving here, we couldn't see any reason why we couldn't stay the night, and I've learnt over time that when someone leaves a negative review, it's worth looking at their other reviews. Sometimes it turns out that they joined P4N the day that they left the review, and have never reviewed any other location (translation: they're a local who wants to put motorhomes off from parking in that location). On this occasion the person had left six reviews, five were 1* and all of those involved the police. Either he's the unluckiest criminally ill-behaved motorhomer, or a complete troll. So, we decided to stay unless asked to move. When later in the evening two trucks came and parked right next to us, blocking us from the view of the adjacent flats, we felt quite secure in staying here.
