Friday 16 September - Hannover

Where's Bertie? He's in a car park next to Schloss Herrenhausen on the NW side of Hannover. (Exact location: 52.38790, 9.69219)
Weather: Sunny intervals, catching the edge of one brief shower.

The motorhome parking situation in Hannover must surely be the most ridiculous in the country. It's something you'd expect to find in the UK, not here.

There's only one official motorhome parking area in the city, and it's in the car park the entrance to which is on the right hand side of this snap:
The signs at the entrance say that it's Pay & Display, and the charge is €20 for 24 hours. By any standards, and particularly in Germany, €20 for a bit of out-of-the-way car park with no services is extortionate. What is truly bizarre (and applies to cars as well as motorhomes) is that the identical car park right next door is free. Hence, as you can see, that's where the motorhomes are parked. More have arrived since I took that snap earlier.

Other than that bit of ridiculousness, it's a nice spot:

Schloss moat on the left, path along the embankment, car parks on the right.

The Großer Garten, next to which we're parked looks interesting.

The other side of the Schloss/Großer Garten is the Georgengarten, a large area of lovely parkland, around which tomorrow's parkrun takes place. So, that's to where we headed to recce the course.

That's a long, straight avenue! 1.8km.

A small detour from the route when we caught a glimpse of the grand facades on these houses.

Another tiny detour to look at the university building

Lots of water in the park too.

We'd noticed on our way to the park that there's free access, via entry and exit gates, to the front of the Schloss, so that's the way we went on the way back...

...taking another tiny detour, this time to check out the prices for the Großer Garten. On another day I might have felt inclined to pay the €8 fee, but not mid-afternoon today (and certainly not with the black cloud that was then approaching).

Whilst we didn't come here with any intention of visiting the city, perhaps, when we were at the furthest point of the parkrun course, and only another 1.5km from the centre, we should have made the effort to do the extra distance, but neither of us felt any great enthusiasm to take that detour to do some sightseeing before completing the parkrun route and returning back to Bertie.
