Sunday 18 September - Baerl

Where's Bertie? He's in the car park next to the Rhein by Baerl where he also spent our second night in Germany four weeks ago.
Weather: What a contrast to our previous visit. Then it was 35 degrees and unrelenting sunshine. Today it topped out in the low teens and hasn't stopped raining since around 10.30am.

A lovely run was had this morning, up to Ida Turm, which sits atop the hill in between Bad Eilsen and Bückeburg at a dizzying altitude of 220m, then down to Bückeburg for a turn around the Schloss Garten, before retracing our steps back over the hill. The plotted route had us going around the hill on the way back, but Mick fancied the extra ascent and I seldom need much persuasion to visit a summit, even if it is for the second time in a day.

The rain that had fallen on and off through the night held off for most of the outing, with just one shower that got us noticeably wet just as we got to the Schloss. We briefly considered deploying our jackets, but tree cover wasn't far away. By the time we emerged the rain was light enough not to worry us. It was only in the last few minutes that it started in earnest again and I complained that we'd mistimed ourselves by just three minutes. Could have been worse, though: as we put the key in Bertie's lock it became torrential, and we got to 'enjoy' it from indoors.

As I type this at just gone 7pm, it still hasn't stopped raining. With such a forecast, there was no value in seeking somewhere new to visit, and there was much value in spending a goodly chunk of the day driving.

So we drove 250 or so kilometres, breaking for lunch in the middle (having completely failed to notice until we were on the road that lunchtime was upon us).

A tiny navigational mishap towards the end of the journey turned out to be fortuitous as it had us passing a petrol station selling Diesel at 193.9, which is the cheapest we've seen it since entering Germany (last weekend we didn't see it below 210, and as much as 215). With Bertie's fuel gauge almost pointing in the red, we didn't hesitate in buying some, only to then find that there was another station, just out of sight about 100m up the road with it 2c cheaper, then yet another another 100m up the road that was 3c cheaper. Hey ho. Still felt like a bargain at the time (we'll be giddy when we get to France and find it at 175!).

Arriving back in this car park, our priority was not to be parked under a tree (contrary to a month ago when we wanted as much tree cover as possible), and we've sat indoors since then with the constant sound of drumming on the roof. There has been no desire at all to go out for a stroll, but at least this time we have a view of the river, so can watch the barges go by.

(Quick aside: I'm not sure I've explained what's currently going on with our travels. Back in July we contacted our motorhome dealer about Bertie's ongoing leak, seeking an appointment for the week that we travelled out to Europe in August. By the time they finally gave us a date (blaming various staff holidays for the delay), the earliest they could offer was 21 September. This wasn't ideal, as it was right in the middle of our trip, but we also didn't want to put it off until the end of the trip as there's not much time left on the warranty and if we have ongoing problems we'd like to know about them sooner rather than later. So, we're travelling all the way back to Belgium, to then ...ummm...go somewhere that hasn't been decided yet. All rather inconvenient, and I have my doubts that anything will be achieved next week other than the dealer saying 'Yep, you've got some leaks. You'd best make another appointment.')
